NBA Player Updates 6/25: LeBron, Carmelo, Off-Season Schedule and More
June 25, 2014
We’ve got just one day left before the beginning of the 2014 NBA Draft, and the anticipation is at a fever pitch. We’re sure to see plenty of moves and speculation before the big night, so with that in mind let’s check in on some of the notable happenings out there and see what everyone’s talking about right now.
LeBron Opts Out: We’d be remiss if we didn’t start out with the big news from the NBA yesterday, which is LeBron James’ decision to opt out of his current contract with the Miami Heat. With that decision, he’ll now become an unrestricted free agent and test the waters to see what could potentially happen to him on the open market.
That said, there’s no guarantee James will even dip his toe into the free agent water. He could simply re-sign with Miami on a lesser deal to give the team more cap flexibility and keep his talents in South Beach for the foreseeable future on a new contract.
Now that James is opting out, will Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade follow suit? Probably, and if they do there’s a pretty good chance that the Big Three will reunite in Miami with more cap flexibility for the team to make some roster moves. All in all, it’ll be a good situation for Miami.

Carmelo Anthony Outlook: Now let’s move on to the other big free agent fish on the market this off-season by checking out Anthony. After officially opting out of his deal early this week, speculation has run rampant as to where he may eventually end up.
Let’s start out with Chicago, who seems to be the favorite to land Carmelo’s services. They’ve been making moves in preparation for this moment for months, clearing space and adding easy-trade contracts to their roster. A sign-and-trade could potentially be in the cards here, and wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for the Knicks, who need some young rebuilding blocks to help them take the next step under Phil Jackson.
Then there’s the Rockets, who have reportedly been trying to work trades for both Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin in order to free up enough cap room to satisfy an Anthony Deal. He doesn’t seem to be quite as good a fit in Houston as he would be in Chicago, but that hasn’t stopped the Rockets from being extremely interested.
Other wild-card destinations that will be making a push to land Carmelo include the Lakers and Mavericks, who both have plenty of room to accommodate him. Atlanta could also be in the fray as well.
With LeBron James opting out of his deal yesterday, fuel has been added to the speculation of Anthony going to Miami. Some other dominoes have to fall first, and each player would have to sign on the cheap, but a potential Big Four is definitely possible. Stay tuned on this one.
NBA 2014 Off-Season Schedule: It’ll be a long off-season, but we’ll have plenty of happenings (and rumors) around the league to keep us busy. The major events this summer will be the NBA Draft and the free agency period, so let’s check out the dates on those and a few others.
