NBA Player Updates 6/28: News from Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
June 28, 2014
It’s been a pretty active NBA off-season week, what with the draft and all the rumors flying around. The activity will only serve to pick up in the coming days as we enter the free agency period, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look at some of the current headlines out there right now.
Carmelo Free Agency Timeframe: According to a report released yesterday, we’ve now got a rough idea of when Carmelo Anthony will decide his immediate future in the NBA. He’ll have his mind made up by the second week of July, and his decision will likely have a domino effect on the rest of the free agent market.
Anthony will have sit-down meetings with the Knicks, Bulls, Lakers, Mavericks and Rockets during the early part of next month. Each team will try to convince him that they’re the best place for him to snag a championship ring, which is the motivating force behind Anthony’s assumed departure from New York.
Of course, there’s still the Big Three--or possibly Big Four--scenario in Miami, and we’ll have to wait and see if that materializes.

Zach Randolph Opts In: Earlier this week, there were some reports out there stating the Grizzlies’ Zach Randolph might just opt out of his deal and test the free agent market. Those rumors proved to be false, however, as he opted into his deal yesterday and agreed to a two-year contract extension.
Randolph will make $20 million over the course of the extension, and his return to Memphis shores up their potent frontcourt. The Grizzlies must believe they’re pretty close to a winning formula, so look for them to add a few pieces in the rest of the off-season as they try to make some more noise out West.
Around the League: Let’s check in on a couple of other notes from around the NBA as we wrap things up today.
The Sixers announced a couple of moves in the wake of their big draft night. Guard Jason Richardson picked up his player option and will be returning for the 2014-15 season, and center Bryon Mullens opted out. Richardson was injured last season, while Mullens came to Philly late in the year and played in 18 games.
Down in Phoenix, the Suns extended qualifying offers to both P.J. Tucker and Eric Bledsoe. That makes both of them restricted free agents and they’re likely to see some action on the open market. That said, it’s not expected either will leave since Phoenix will likely match their offers.
NBA 2014 Off-Season Schedule: It’ll be a long off-season, but we’ll have plenty of happenings (and rumors) around the league to keep us busy. The major events this summer will be the NBA Draft and the free agency period, so let’s check out the dates on those and a few others.
