NBA Player Updates 6/30: Carmelo, Miami Heat, Off-Season Schedule and More

June 30, 2014

See the Latest Odds

The NBA rumors have been flying all weekend, and we’ll finally get some answers to those burning questions over the next few weeks. In the meantime, there are a lot of headlines to talk about, so let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there.

Heat’s Plans: Let’s start things off this morning by heading down to Miami to check out the Heat. The team got some financially positive news this weekend when it was announced that Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Udonis Haslem would be opting out of their deals, presumably to give the Heat more room to retool their salary restrictions and try to get some more help down to South Beach for another title run.
The big piece in all of this is, of course, LeBron James. He’s opting out as well, and the team needs to show him that they’re committed to keeping the core together to maintain their dominance in the East. It’ll be a while before we know exactly what’s going on, and how the team plans on structuring everything. That said, you can rest assured Miami will do everything in their power to keep James happy.

Anthony’s Plans: Now let’s take a minute to check out the latest buzz on Carmelo Anthony. This news doesn’t directly involve him, but could play a factor in where he ends up for the 2014-15 season.
Both the Knicks and Lakers are reportedly going to be making a pitch to free agent Pau Gasol, and each hopes to land him in an effort to entice Anthony to their team.
Both teams have a case in thinking they could get Gasol into town. He’s been with the Lakers for the past six years, and New York has new president Phil Jackson, who has a great relationship with the big man.
Still, none of that means Gasol will want to play for either team, and none of it means that Anthony would be compelled to go somewhere Gasol is playing. It’s an interesting scenario, but for now it’s all speculation. For now, he'll reportedly be starting out his free agent tour in Chicago, which will be one of the top entries on his list of potential destinations.

Around the League: Let’s check out a few of the minor transactions from yesterday that will be having an impact on the free agent market tomorrow.
The Raptors’ Nando De Colo, Greivis Vasquez and Patrick Patterson will be heading to restricted free agency. Toronto still has matching rights.
The Clippers declined the team option for Willie Green.
The Lakers declined to make a qualifying offer to Kent Bazemore. He’ll be a UFA.
The Pelicans declined to make an offer to Brian Roberts. He will be a UFA as well.

NBA 2014 Off-Season Schedule: It’ll be a long off-season, but we’ll have plenty of happenings (and rumors) around the league to keep us busy. The major events this summer will be the NBA Draft and the free agency period, so let’s check out the dates on those and a few others.

June 26: NBA Draft
July 1: Teams can officially begin negotiating with free agents
July 10: Players can begin signing contracts
October 4: Pre-season begins
October 28: First game of the 2014-15 season
April 18, 2015: Playoffs begin
