NBA Player Updates 7/14: Free Agent News, Off-Season Schedule and More
July 14, 2014
Our heads are still spinning from the dizzying flurry of NBA free agency activity over the past few days, and there’s no immediate end in sight. There will be plenty of additional transactions this week, so expect the news to be coming steadily. That said, let’s take our daily look at the key players out there.
Pierce Deal: With all the craziness surrounding LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony this weekend, deals like Paul Pierce’s got lost in the cracks. Let’s rectify that by checking out his new contract and seeing what it will mean.
The Wizards got the veteran Pierce to agree to terms on a two year deal at their mid-level exception this weekend, and the contract will feature a second-year player option for him.
Pierce took a step back statistically with the Nets this past year, logging 13.5 PPG, 4.6 RPG and 2.4 APG. Those were all career-lows.
The early indications seem to be good for the Wizards. He’ll bring another dimension of scoring to an already exciting team on the edge of major success.

Deng Deal: We’ve speculated on this for a week or so and it’s finally come true. Luol Deng agreed to a two-year, $20 million contract with the Miami Heat yesterday, completing his move from Chicago to Cleveland to South Beach. He’ll get a player option in the 2015-16 season.
Deng is a great pickup for the Heat, who were scrambling to add free agents after LeBron announced he’d be heading back to Cleveland. He has a 16.0 PPG average for his career, making him a potent dimension in an already stacked Miami lineup. We’ll get an official word on the signing this week.
Parsons Deal: We should visit this transaction as well, since it has a heavy bearing on the Western Conference this season. Chandler Parsons will be heading to the Dallas Mavericks since the Rockets declined to match his three-year offer sheet.
The deal is worth north of $45 million, so it was a big chunk of change for Houston to swallow.
Parsons joins a Dallas lineup that will look very interesting this season. The Mavs inked up Richard Jefferson and added veteran Tyson Chandler this off-season, so the pieces seem to be coming together for them.
NBA 2014 Off-Season Schedule: It’ll be a long off-season, but we’ll have plenty of happenings (and rumors) around the league to keep us busy. The major events this summer will be the NBA Draft and the free agency period, so let’s check out the dates on those and a few others.
