NBA Player Updates 7/23: The Latest Free Agent News, Off-Season Schedule and More
July 23, 2014
Even though we’re knee-deep in one of the most barren periods of the year for the NBA, there’s still plenty of news coming in from all around the league. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look at the headlines and see which players are in the news.
Hummel Deal: This one’s from a little earlier in the week, but we haven’t examined it quite yet so let’s check it out. Robbie Hummel, who was a free agent forward, has inked a one-year deal to remain in Minnesota with the Timberwolves. He’ll get around $1 million for the contract.
Hummel is coming off a 53-game season in which he averaged 12.4 minutes. He posted marks of 3.4 PPG and 2.5 RPG in that span.

Cavs-Jazz Deal: Last night, we got word on a potentially groundbreaking move that could reverberate around the NBA, even though it involves a few less-than-newsworthy players.
The Cavaliers sent G Carrick Felix to the Utah Jazz in exchange for a trio of players with non-guaranteed deals, which, if you’re following the situation, gives them a lot of cap flexibility in their supposed pursuit of Minnesota’s Kevin Love.
Cleveland sent Felix and a 2015 second-round draft selection along with $1 million in cash to Utah in exchange for John Lucas, Erik Murphy and Malcolm Thomas.
After the dust settles, the Cavs will get $3.3 million in additional cap space. Whether or not they can wrangle in Love with that money remains to be seen.
Love Latest: It’s been a couple of days since we’ve heard a significant development on the potential trade involving Kevin Love. Let’s check out the latest news and see what’s happening on that front.
With yesterday’s Cavs-Jazz deal, Cleveland is now certain they can fit Love onto their roster and fall below the cap. A potential offer to the Timberwolves will likely include Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and a first-round pick in the future.
That said, there are some rumblings around Chicago that say the Bulls have dropped their names into the hat and are interested in picking up Love themselves. A potential offer from Chicago would probably include Taj Gibson, Jimmy Butler and a few other assets.
This is a fluid situation, and it remains to be seen how it will all work out, so we’ll keep you posted.
NBA 2014 Off-Season Schedule: It’ll be a long off-season, but we’ll have plenty of happenings (and rumors) around the league to keep us busy. The major events this summer will be the NBA Draft and the free agency period, so let’s check out the dates on those and a few others.
