NBA Player Updates 7/24: Love Latest, Allen, Off-Season Schedule and More
July 24, 2014
There have been plenty of minor transactions and news items happening in the NBA so far this week, and there could be at least a couple of big ones on the way very soon. With that said, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there right now.
Love Deal Latest: This Kevin Love situation is getting interesting. Yesterday, we got word that the Bulls had made a legitimate offer to the Timberwolves in an effort to land the uber-forward. The proposal includes three players: Taj Gibson, Doug McDermott and Nikola Mirotic.
Gibson has been a dynamic scorer off the bench in Chicago, McDermott is a first-round pick and Mirotic is a star in Spain that was only recently signed to the Bulls.
Whether or not this is just posturing by Minnesota to coax a bigger offer out of the Cavaliers (who have always seemed to be the frontrunners to a Love trade) remains to be seen. The Cavs would likely have to give up Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and at least one future first-round pick.
On a related note, the Boston Celtics--once considered the frontrunners to land Love--appear to have dropped out of the pursuit. We may see them reemerge in this situation, however. They’ve shown some willingness to be a third party in what possibly might become a three-team deal to get all of the assets in place within any potential Love trade.
We’ll keep you posted on how this plays out.

Nelson Deal: By most indications, free agent guard Jameer Nelson will be moving his stuff to Dallas. Sources close to the situation have him prepared to sign a $2.7 million deal with the Mavericks.
The Magic waived Nelson after they picked up rookie Elfrid Payton earlier this off-season. It was a productive year for Nelson in 2013-14, though; He posted a 12.1 PPG average and a 7.0 APG average.
Allen In Cleveland?: It’s looking like we may see Ray Allen back out on the court for his 19th season in the league, and you can probably guess where he might end up. Reports say he’s leaning toward coming back for one more year, and if he does he’ll take a spot in Cleveland alongside ex-teammates LeBron James and Mike Miller.
Allen just turned 39 this past weekend and is coming off a 9.3 PPG average in 20 playoff games.
NBA 2014 Off-Season Schedule: It’ll be a long off-season, but we’ll have plenty of happenings (and rumors) around the league to keep us busy. The major events this summer will be the NBA Draft and the free agency period, so let’s check out the dates on those and a few others.
June 26: NBA Draft
July 1: Teams can officially begin negotiating with free agents
July 10: Players can begin signing contracts
October 4: Pre-season begins
October 28: First game of the 2014-15 season
April 18, 2015: Playoffs begin
