NBA Player Updates 8/7: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 7, 2014
Even though it’s the off-season for the NBA, there’s still been plenty to talk about lately. We’ve got another batch of news items and speculation in store for you today, so let’s take our daily look around the league and see which players are making headlines out there right now. Here’s the latest.
Cavs Pieces: Yesterday, we got our first official look at some of the Cavaliers’ new roleplayers who will help the team on their quest to notch a championship. New arrivals Mike Miller and James Jones got their introductions yesterday, and each expressed a sense of excitement surrounding their desire to reunite with LeBron James in Cleveland.
Both players have a similar skillset, and they’ll utilize it to the best of their abilities with their new team. Expect both to contribute with plenty of long-range, opportunistic shooting in their supporting roles. They should fit in nicely alongside James, Kyrie Irving and (supposedly) fellow new guy Kevin Love.
Speaking of outside shooting, the Cavs may be getting another dose of it from none other than the greatest three-point artist in the history of the game. Ray Allen, who is reportedly mulling retirement, is being recruited by the trio of ex-Heat teammates who jumped ship to head to Cleveland, though it’s unclear whether their efforts are having any effect on his decision.
With or without Allen, this figures to be a special year in Cleveland. The stars are finally aligning for a real shot at a championship, and with LeBron James as focused as he’s ever been in his career, we’d say they’re the favorites to take the wide-open Eastern Conference.

Marion Outlook: Just a short time ago, the free agent market on veteran forward Shawn Marion seemed pretty thin. Things have changed recently, however, and it’s looking like he’s garnering some interest out there on the open market.
The aforementioned Cavaliers are said to be kicking the tires on Marion, and the Pacers (who need bodies on their roster after Paul George’s freak injury and Lance Stephenson leaving this summer) have reportedly shown some interest, too.
Marion is reportedly setting up some more meetings with other NBA franchises, so it’s possible that we haven’t heard the last of this particular situation. That said, the most recent repots have him leaning toward joining up with the Cavaliers, so it appears that they've got the inside track right now. We’ll keep you posted on his whereabouts.
NBA 2014 Off-Season Schedule: It’ll be a long off-season, but we’ll have plenty of happenings (and rumors) around the league to keep us busy. The major events this summer will be the NBA Draft and the free agency period, so let’s check out the dates on those and a few others.
June 26: NBA Draft
July 1: Teams can officially begin negotiating with free agents
July 10: Players can begin signing contracts
October 4: Pre-season begins
October 28: First game of the 2014-15 season
April 18, 2015: Playoffs begin
