NBA Player Updates 8/10: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 10, 2014
This past week, we saw all sorts of interesting happenings and heard all sorts of intriguing rumors around the NBA. With each passing day, we’re getting a clearer picture of the season to come. That said, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there right now. Here’s the latest.
Papanikolaou Deal: We missed out on this one yesterday, so let’s visit with the Rockets’ reported signing that occurred late last week.
According to reports, the team agreed to terms with forward Kostas Papanikolaou, who is from Greece. He was drafted back in 2012 by the Knicks, who then traded his rights to Portland. Houston acquired those rights in July of last year.
Papanikolaou has been stellar for the Greeks on the international stage, which is likely what ultimately helped spur this signing. He won MVP honors at the Under-20 Europeon championship in 2009, so he’s no stranger to accolades. We’ll have to wait and see what the Rockets’ plans are for him, however.

Cavaliers Preseason Highlights: We’ve got an idea of what the Cavaliers’ preseason schedule will look like now, so Cleveland residents and LeBron fans should be getting geared up.
The Cavaliers will open things up on October 5 against Maccabi Tel Aviv, who are the team formerly led by Cavs coach David Blatt. Then, one week later in Rio De Janiero, Cleveland will take on the Miami Heat in a game that’s about as must-see as preseason games can get.
Other notable dates on the Cavaliers’ preseason schedule include the Pacers (in Cincinnati) on October 15 and against the Bulls (in Columbus on the Ohio State campus) on October 20. Mark your calendars.
Wiggins Outlook: Now that we can pencil No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins into the Minnesota Timberwolves lineup, it’s time to start speculating on what his role will be once he’s officially on the team (which, presumably, will be August 23).
Assuming the T-Wolves don’t deal him away, most people are expecting an immediate contribution from Wiggins, as opposed to the lesser role he would have had in Cleveland.
Minnesota doesn’t quite boast as many weapons as the now-stacked Cavaliers do, so he’ll have to carry the load as one of the team’s top scorers. He’s got the raw talent to do so, as he posted 17.1 PPG and 5.9 RPG in his freshman year at Kansas, but will likely experience a few bumps along the road as he adjusts to the NBA game. Still, he’ll make a potent combination with Ricky Rubio if he can put it together quickly.
NBA 2014 Off-Season Schedule: It’ll be a long off-season, but we’ll have plenty of happenings (and rumors) around the league to keep us busy. The major events this summer will be the NBA Draft and the free agency period, so let’s check out the dates on those and a few others.
June 26: NBA Draft
July 1: Teams can officially begin negotiating with free agents
July 10: Players can begin signing contracts
October 4: Pre-season begins
October 28: First game of the 2014-15 season
April 18, 2015: Playoffs begin
