NBA Player Updates 8/13: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 13, 2014
We’ve seen quite a few significant developments in the NBA over the past few days. That’s a little odd for the off-season, but hey, we basketball fans will take it. That said, let’s go on our daily roundup of the league headlines and see what’s happening out there with your favorite players and teams. Here’s the latest.
Hibbert Latest: We could see something brewing between the Pacers and Pistons in the very near future. Early this week, word broke that Indiana was shopping Roy Hibbert, and that they reached out to Detroit about a possible deal for Greg Monroe (who is a restricted free agent).
Despite the persistent rumor, this deal doesn’t seem to make much sense. The Pistons really don’t need Roy Hibbert, as they’re already set with Andre Drummond as their leading big man. Still, that doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing some other type of deal on the horizon.

Monroe Offer?: In a related story, it appears we’re getting closer and closer to what might be an inevitable conclusion in Detroit, and that is Monroe signing a qualifying offer to stay with the Pistons for one more year, then testing the free agent market in 2015.
According to reports, Monroe would “definitely” take a qualifying offer for 2014-15, which would be worth $5.3 million, in order to be able to hit the open market.
That said, we could see things dragging out as both the team and Monroe consider their options. There’s a deadline of October 1 to agree to a deal or a qualifying offer. That said, the latest rumors say he'll be accepting an offer, so we won't need to wait that long.
Marion Latest: A little while back, we got word that free agent forward Shawn Marion was more than likely going to be signing with the Cavaliers. The move seemed inevitable, but as yet nothing has come of it. Now it appears we have a new player in the race for his services, and that’s the aforementioned Indiana Pacers.
Marion met with team president Larry Bird on Monday, and the two discussed a potential signing with Indy. The Pacers are desperately trying to fill the gaping hole left by injured star Paul George, and inking Marion would be a step in the right direction.
Is it enough, though? Indiana can offer more money, but playing alongside LeBron James for a minimum $1.4 million salary sounds pretty tempting as well.
NBA 2014 Off-Season Schedule: It’ll be a long off-season, but we’ll have plenty of happenings (and rumors) around the league to keep us busy. The major events this summer will be the NBA Draft and the free agency period, so let’s check out the dates on those and a few others.
June 26: NBA Draft
July 1: Teams can officially begin negotiating with free agents
July 10: Players can begin signing contracts
October 4: Pre-season begins
October 28: First game of the 2014-15 season
