NBA Player Updates 8/19: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 19, 2014
Even though the NBA is stuck in off-season mode right now, there are still plenty of developing storylines out there to keep us basketball fans busy. With that said, let’s take our daily look around the league and check out some of the notable situations and players everyone’s talking about right now. Here’s the latest.
Marion Outlook: Now that veteran forward Shawn Marion will be joining up with LeBron and company in Cleveland, it’s time to start speculating on what that could mean for the Cavaliers.
Picking up Marion for the veteran minimum is a great get for Cleveland. While he’s not quite the driving force he was in his younger days, he’s still more than capable of providing valuable minutes in a reserve role behind James or Kevin Love. Some pundits are also speculating that he could take the floor with Love and James in certain situations.
That said, Marion’s skills have eroded with time (he’s 36), and his free-throw rate and defensive numbers have taken an hit in recent seasons. Still, as the best available option for an across-the-board veteran presence, he’ll work wonders for the Cavs lineup.

USA Basketball Cuts Coming: This week--specifically, in the next two days--we could be seeing the final version of the Team USA roster.
The squad has an exhibition game against the Dominican Republic tomorrow night, then will play Puerto Rico (another exhibition game) on Friday. In between those two, according to sources close to the team, the final cuts to the roster will be made.
We’ll probably be seeing those moves by Thursday, when team officials will trim the current 16-man lineup to 12 or possibly 13 guys.
The idea here is to get the final roster together by Thursday so that the team can get a solid practice in before Friday’s game. That said, the possibility still exists that the cuts will be made after the Puerto Rico matchup.
Team USA will be flying to Spain on Saturday for the World Cup, which begins on August 30.
