NBA Player Updates 8/22: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 22, 2014
Even though we’re deeply mired in the off-season in the NBA, it should be a pretty exciting weekend. USA Basketball has another tune-up game tonight, and tomorrow is the presumed target date for the biggest off-season trade in recent memory. There will be plenty to talk about this weekend, so with that let’s take our daily look around the league and see what everybody’s up to.
Team USA Update: The USA Basketball team has been in a holding pattern since Wednesday, and we’re not likely to hear much about any changes until after their next tune-up game tonight.
The US will play Puerto Rico in New York this evening, and they’ll still be carrying 16 players on their roster. The team will have to leave the country tomorrow and head to Spain in preparation for the World Cup, and will have to get down to 12 players by August 29. That means the team could potentially take 13 guys overseas and put off the decision even further. Either way, there will be at least a few cuts after tonight’s game.
Guys who are on the bubble include DeMarcus Cousins, DeMar DeRozan, Andre Drummond, Gordon Hayward, Damian Lillard and Mason Plumlee. The decision on who gets cut may also be affected by the health of starting point guard Derrick Rose, who sat out Wednesday’s game due to general soreness. He’s scheduled to be playing tonight, however.

Durant UA Deal: Here’s an interesting tidbit that emerged into the news stream yesterday. Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant is reportedly weighing a hefty offer from Under Armor. The proposed deal could pay him between $265 million and $285 million over a span of 10 years.
Durant is currently in a deal with Nike, who has the right to match Under Armor’s proposal. If UA does win out--with Nike refusing to match--they’d be committing to around 10 percent of their current annual marketing budget solely on Durant.
