NBA Player Updates 8/25: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 25, 2014
It was a pretty eventful weekend in the NBA, especially considering the fact that we’re deep in the off-season right now. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look around the league and check out some of the headlines and notable players out there as we inch closer to the 2014-15 regular season.
Mack Signing: We didn’t get a chance to check this one out a couple of days ago when it happened, so let’s take a moment to visit this development.
Atlanta re-signed guard Shelvin Mack late last week, as he seems to be a key piece in coach Mike Budenholzer’s philosophy. Mack is coming off a 7.5 PPG average and a 3.7 APG average (second on the team) last season. He proved durable as well, playing in 75 games with a total of 11 starts.
Mack has played with the Wizards and Sixers as well, but seems to have found a consistent home in Atlanta.

Cavaliers Outlook: Now that the proverbial dust has settled on this weekend’s Kevin Love trade, we can start what’s sure to be a long period of speculation in the aftermath. For the Cavaliers, this trade marks a championship-or-bust philosophy, which is something of a double-edged sword.
On the one hand, Cleveland now has the most enviable roster in the entire league, with Love joining a potent starting lineup that includes Kyrie Irving and the one and only LeBron James. They’re instantly the favorites in the Eastern Conference, and though they may face a bit of resistance from the Bulls and Heat, most people are already penciling them in for an NBA Finals appearance at the very least.
On the other hand, coming with a stacked roster such as this is the crushing weight of unbelievable expectations. Though the Cavaliers made an appearance in the Finals in 2007, they haven’t been able to take the title--ever. After such a dramatic turnaround, that trophy may well be in reach.
One thing’s for sure: It’s going to be an interesting season in Cleveland.
