NBA Player Updates 9/11: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
September 11, 2014
After another off-day yesterday, Team USA will be getting back to World Cup action this afternoon when they hit the semifinal round of the tournament. In the meantime, there’s plenty of news to sift through so let’s take our daily look around the league and see who’s making headlines out there.
World Cup Shocker: Yesterday, we got the surprise of the tournament, and what ended up being spectacular news for the USA squad.
World Cup favorites Spain were defeated by France in a huge upset yesterday in the quarterfinals, and now the host country will be leaving the tournament without even a medal.
France took it to the Spanish team in near perfect fashion yesterday en route to a 65-52 victory, riding tough defense to the biggest win of the World Cup so far.
That’s awesome news for Team USA, as Spain was considered to be their only legitimate threats at capturing a fourth straight international gold medal. That said, if France plays the US like they did Spain, the Americans are in real trouble.
Before Team USA gets to all that, they’ve got to beat Lithuania today in the semifinals. If they can prevail, then it’s on to the gold medal game to face the winner of the France-Serbia matchup. The final game is Sunday.

Billups Retirement: Yesterday, word broke that Chauncey Billups will be calling it a career after 17 years in the league. His health was a major factor in his decision as he’s only been able to suit up for 61 combined games over the past three campaigns.
The 37-year-old Billups was the 2004 NBA Finals MVP and most recently played for Detroit. After being drafted in 1997 by the Celtics, he spent time in Toronto, Minnesota, Denver, Detroit, New York and Los Angeles.
