NBA Player Updates 9/17: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
September 17, 2014
Now that we’ve had a couple of days to calm down from the World Cup frenzy, it’s time to readjust and start looking forward to the 2014-15 campaign in the NBA. Even though it’s the off-season, we’ve still got plenty to talk about, so with that in mind here’s a look at a few notable happenings from around the league.
Kevin Garnett Update: There’s been a lot of speculation this off-season about whether or not Nets veteran Kevin Garnett will come back to the NBA for a 20th year. We haven’t heard much from the man himself, but that hasn’t stopped other sources from chiming in with their own outlooks.
Brooklyn coach Lionel Hollins has reportedly penciled Garnett in for a starting gig this season and is counting on him to suit up for the team. He also expects Garnett to bounce back from an injury-plagued campaign last year and put up numbers more reminiscent of the star we all know.
Hollins also alluded to the fact that he wouldn’t put Garnett on a minutes restriction like he was last season, so if he does indeed come back, we’ll see plenty of him.
All of that aside, we still haven’t heard anything from Garnett himself, and he’s obviously got the final say. Expect him to stay mum until the last minute, as per usual.

Klay Thompson Update: We’ve got some fresh news on World Cup superstar and Warriors Splash Brother Klay Thompson this morning, so let’s see what’s going on with him.
After an off-season of hearing his name in trade talks constantly, Thompson made a name for himself during Team USA’s stellar run to World Cup gold. Now, his camp is trying to take that tide of solid play and turn it into a payday.
Thompson is still on his rookie contract, but reportedly is seeking a max extension. He and the team have until an October 31 deadline to work out a potential deal. If that doesn’t happen, Thompson will become a restricted free agent next summer and could potentially leave the Warriors with just half of their hot-shooting backcourt.
Will Golden State pay up? That remains to be seen, as they’re staying quiet for now. Team brass has remarked on how Thompson is an important priority for them in the past, however, and given the timing of his World Cup surge we don’t see how they’ll be able to deny him.
