NBA Player Updates 10/7: News From Around the League, Schedule and More
October 7, 2014
The NBA preseason continued last night, and with each passing day we’re that much closer to the official start of the 2014-15 season. The clock now stands at three weeks exactly, so with that in mind let’s bide our time with our daily look around the league.
Longtime Mavs forward Dirk Nowitzki has been diagnosed with a contusion on his right hip. This news comes straight from the team, though it’s unclear when he sustained the injury.
The good news here is that the general consensus seems to be that Nowitzki’s injury isn’t serious. Still, don’t expect to see him in action tonight against Houston. He’ll be sitting out as a precaution.

In other injury news, let’s head down to Orlando and check on Magic guard Victor Oladipo. He sprained his MCL during a scrimmage on Friday, and it remains to be seen what kind of timetable the team will put on his return.
This is the second time the MCL bug has bitten Orlando, as Channing Frye suffered the same fate just last week.
If this MCL strain nags at Oladipo, it’ll be the first major setback of his young career. He was out on the floor for a whopping 80 games last season, putting up 13.8 PPG, 4.1 RPG and 4.1 APG averages.
Boston named rookie guard Marcus Smart as the starting point guard during yesterday’s exhibition opener. He’s coming off a minor groin injury, but hopes to make quite an impact as veteran Rajon Rondo gets back to full health after his hand surgery. We’ll see how that goes.
The Hawks’ DeMarre Carroll sat out of yesterday’s preseason opener yesterday. He’s nursing a twisted ankle. Carroll looked like he was close to hitting the floor during warm-ups, so he’s probably not too far off.
