The New York Knicks and Boston Celtics will play a preseason game Wednesday night at the XL Center.
This will be the first preseason game of the season for the New York Knicks, a team that’s looking to improve greatly under new head coach Derek Fisher. If the Knicks hope to make the playoffs, they’ll have to develop some serious depth behind Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire. Look for the Knicks to get rookie Cleanthony Early involved early and often in hopes of him being an immediate contributor. Shane Larkin could be a better player for the Knicks than he was with the Dallas Mavericks if given a fair chance. Jason Smith and Cole Aldrich should also get plenty of work considering the Knicks center position isn’t exactly pretty with Samuel Dalembert the projected starter. Tim Hardaway Jr. is also expected to play despite dealing with a hip injury. The New York Knicks don’t have a ton of talent, so expect everybody to fight for playing time and compete at a high level.
The Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers by 20 points in their first preseason game and left plenty of room for improvement. In the victory, the Celtics shot just 34.1 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three, all while turning the ball over 18 times. Marcus Smart was 0-8 from the field and Evan Turner was the Celtics leading scorer with 15 points. Smart has to grow up quickly for Boston to have any success considering he’s going to be the starting point guard with Rajon Rondo sidelined with a hand injury. I also expect Gerald Wallace to be a lot more aggressive on the offensive end given the fact he’s one of the few veterans on this Celtics team. Like the Knicks, the Celtics are still trying to find themselves and are just going through the motions.
The Knicks are the better team and should be able to cover the small chalk. We have no idea what to expect from the Celtics, especially without Rondo on the court.
