The Brooklyn Nets host the Boston Celtics for a televised NBA preseason game of Sunday afternoon at 3pm ET from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.
The Boston Celtics are 3-3 to start the preseason having only played games against Atlantic division opponents, beating the 76ers twice, splitting two games with the Knicks, and dropping both games to the talented Raptors. PG Rajon Rondo is the leader of the Celtics but hasn’t seen action in the preseason as an injured wrist will likely keep him out until the third week of the regular season. Avery Bradley has run the point at times but is really a shooting guard, which means that either Marcus Smart or Phil Pressey will need to establish themselves as a leader when Rondo is out. The Celtics will get most of their offensive production from their forwards with SF Jeff Green having led the team in points per game last season and PF Jared Sullinger showing double-double threat potential in the preseason while averaging 14.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game through five exhibition contests. Kelly Olynyk has been seeing heavy minutes at the center position and represents a stretch option hitting 9/18 from three point range. The Celtics have some decent bench options with Marcus Thornton being a scorer and Brandon Bass and Tyler Zeller able to hit the glass.
USA TODAY Sports
The Brooklyn Nets are 3-0 to start the preseason but they really haven’t been challenged having faced the Kings twice and Maccabi Tel Aviv from the Israeli league. PG Deron Williams had surgery on both of his ankles in the offseason but all reports point to a full recovery in addition to decent output through three exhibition games. C Brook Lopez was expected to be the catalyst to elevate this Nets team, but unfortunately he’s suffered a setback in his surgically repaired right foot that will keep him out for the remainder of the preseason. Joe Johnson will shift from SG to SF this season after the departure of Paul Pierce, which isn’t the worst idea considering Johnson’s 6’7” 240 pound frame. Mason Plumlee has been an efficient scorer for the Nets down low and figures to see a lot of minutes in this contest as the team prepares to potentially deal with the absence of Lopez again. The Nets have a couple decent options off the bench with Jarrett Jack fully capable of running the offense and scoring and Mirza Teletovic proving himself as one of the more competent stretch forwards in the league hitting the three ball at a high clip.
I like the Celtics in this spot as Boston has played double the amount of games and figures to have more chemistry developed at this stage. It’s not like the Nets were convincing in their narrow wings against the perennial doormat Kings. Follow me on Twitter @_BrianFitz_ for live betting tips during the NFL games today.
