NBA Player Updates 10/19: News From Around the League
We’re just a little over a week away from the start of the 2014-15 NBA regular season, so it’s time for fans to start getting excited. While we’re waiting on those preseason tip-offs, let’s take a closer look at some of the notable names out there and see who’s making news.
Here’s an interesting tidbit out of the Knicks organization. Power forward Jason Smith might be able to work his way into the starting lineup when the season opens, thanks to his solid play in the preseason.
New York coach Derek Fisher alluded to the possibility of Smith leapfrogging Quincy Acy, Andrea Bargnani and Amar’e Stoudemire to get the starting nod. If Smith continues to play well, that opens up a lot of options for the Knicks, who could mix in Stoudemire, Bargnani and Acy or some combination of the three during certain looks this season. It’ll be interesting to see how things shake out.

Yesterday morning, it was announced that the Jazz’s Trevor Booker had sprained his ankle during the team’s preseason game on Friday night. He played in 17 minutes before getting injured and shot 1-for-5 on the game.
We’ll have to see what Booker looks like this week and wait for an official timetable from the team. He was inked up on a three-year deal this summer.
Good news for the Pacers’ David West, and he could use some. The Indy forward grabbed a rebound in the third quarter of yesterday’s game and came down on his right ankle.
The team gave him an X-ray yesterday, and the results were negative. That said, he’ll still need to be reevaluated in the coming days to see exactly how long he’ll be out. As of right now there’s no timeline.
Speaking of ankle injuries, there are several around the league right now. The Kings’ Rudy Gay hurt his during Friday’s practice and was out of action yesterday because of it. He’s carrying a 12.0 PPG average this preseason.
The Clippers’ Chris Douglas-Roberts also has an ankle issue, suffered Friday night. Likewise, he wasn’t able to play yesterday. The team doesn’t think his condition is too serious, though.
The Sixers’ Malcolm Lee sprained his left ankle during yesterday’s game against the Magic. He’ll be reevaluated in the coming days.
