The Oklahoma City Thunder host the Minnesota Timberwolves for a preseason game on Sunday night at 7PM ET in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are off to a 1-2 start in the preseason with a win over the lowly Sixers and losses to the Bucks and Pacers. The Timberwolves will be looking to establish an identity after the departure of Kevin Love but until that happens PG Ricky Rubio is one of the better distributors in the league to get everyone on the team involved. C Nikola Pekovic is likely the workhorse of this team after averaging 17.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game last season, but the health of his ankle that kept him out to close last season could factor into his production. Of course a lot of the attention will definitely be paid to Andrew Wiggins who is the star of the future but may be asked to play like one as a rookie. The Timberwolves seem to have depth with players like Corey Brewer, Thaddeus Young, Chase Buddinger, Gorgui Dieng, and JJ Barea all capable of giving productive minutes, but the team definitely lacks upper echelon quality as currently constructed.
USA TODAY Sports
The Oklahoma City Thunder are 2-3 to kick off the exhibition slate after back-to-back blowout losses to the Pelicans and Raptors. With Kevin Durant missing action, the Thunder will need some time to develop chemistry and determine who the natural players are to step up and give quality minutes. Russell Westbrook looked fully healthy last time out against the Raptors and figures to take on an increased role in scoring from the point position. Serge Ibaka played his first preseason game on Friday and gave a big spark to the team that would eventually fade as his minutes waned throughout the remainder of the game. Steven Adams has been a bright spot at the center position making a strong case to get the starting job and Anthony Morrow has made a similarly strong case to land the shooting guard position after scoring in double figures in four straight preseason games. Jeremy Lamb and Perry Jones are still works in progress off the bench but will likely see plenty of minutes in this contest.
Both teams have adjustments still to make without their star players from last year which makes this a speculative spot at best if looking to place a wager. I was all over the Raptors to take advantage of the Thunder on Friday night and if I had more faith in the Timberwolves I’d be acting similarly here. Instead it's just a lean to the visitor.
