The Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves square off Thursday night at the Target Center.
The Detroit Pistons lost to the Denver Nuggets during their season opener on Wednesday, 89-79. Josh Smith led the way with 25 points and Spencer Dinwiddie scored 15 points off the bench. While Andre Drummond shot 50 percent from the field and grabbed nine rebounds, he wasn’t nearly as aggressive and dominant as he was in the FIBA tournament. Detroit clearly missed Greg Monroe on the offensive end and the glass, but the big man is expected to miss this game as well to finish up his suspension. The Detroit Pistons need to discover more offensive weapons, as shooting 36.9 percent from the field simply isn’t going to cut it against anybody in this league. Expect guys such as Caron Butler and D.J. Augustin to be more aggressive off the bench in this matchup.

The Minnesota Timberwolves also lost their season opener Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies, 105-101. Despite the loss, the young Timberwolves have to be happy with their performance as they shot 45.3 percent from the field and grabbed 47 rebounds. Thaddeus Young led the way with 26 points and four rebounds, while Mo Williams scored 18 points off the bench and dished out four assists. Andrew Wiggins was 2-5 from the field for six points in his NBA debut. Overall, the Timberwolves looked sharp for their first game and had chances to beat the Grizzlies late. Assuming Minnesota can cut back on the 23 turnovers and take the confidence into this game, the TImberwolves have a chance to get in the win column here. It’s going to be interesting to see how this team responds.
The Pistons are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games ad 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games playing on 0 days rest. The Timberwolves are 3-15 ATS in their last 18 games playing on 0 days rest and 15-5-1 ATS in their last 21 vs. the NBA Central. The Pistons are 0-4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
I was somewhat high on the Timberwolves talent entering the season and their game against Memphis was impressive. If Minnesota can bring that same energy at home, they’ll get the win and cover the number.
