Today the NBA picks back up after a zero-game schedule yesterday. We’ve got five matchups to look forward to on this holiday, so in the meantime we’ll check out a few of the notable players and storylines happening out there right now. Here’s the latest.

The Heat’s Chris Bosh is expected to be sitting out today’s game against the Cavaliers. He’s dealing with a calf injury that has had him sidelined for a half-dozen games.
Bosh carries averages of 21.6 PPG and 8.2 RPG in his 23 appearances thus far.

The Knicks’ J.R. Smith likely won’t be out on the court today against the Wizards, either. He’s dealing with a heel injury and has missed the last seven.
Smith averages 25.1 MPG and has put up 10.3 PPG and 3.3 APG so far.

In one of the biggest storylines of the last week, Josh Smith was released by the Pistons on Monday. It didn’t take long for him to find a home, though.
Yesterday, we learned that Smith would be signing with the Rockets and will be placed in the starting lineup immediately.
If this Smith experiment works out, it gives Houston a leg up on the competition out in the West. The much-maligned big man is averaging 13.1 PPG and 7.2 RPG in 28 appearances this year.

The Cavs got a crippling blow yesterday. Their starting center Anderson Varejao will miss the rest of the season after tearing his Achilles on Tuesday against the Timberwolves.
Varejao finishes with a 9.8 PPG and 6.5 RPG average. Tristan Thompson will likely step into the starting spot now.

Once the Nets’ Deron Williams returns from his strained calf, he will be coming off the bench.
We’re not sure how long that role will last, but in Williams’ absence, Jarrett Jack has put up some pretty nice numbers in the team’s two wins.
