2015 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Willie Cauley-Stein

USA TODAY Sports

Height: 7’0”

Weight: 240

Position: Center

Career Stats: 8.0 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 0.9 assists and 2.2 blocks.

Strengths: Willie Cauley-Stein has the elite size for the next level and the potential to put on more weight. Cauley-Stein runs the floor well for a big and is a natural rim protector. Cauley-Stein has a ridiculous wingspan and is very active on the glass. Cauley-Stein can defend multiple positions and is comfortable away from the rim. Cauley-Stein is a terrific shot blocker with great instincts and is a solid help defender with quick reaction time. Willie Cauley-Stein plays the game with very high energy and comes with no off-the-court issues. Cauley-Stein has high upside and is only going to improve at both ends.

Weaknesses: Willie Cauley-Stein isn’t as great of a rebounder as you’d expect with his size. Cauley-Stein needs to improve his mid-range jumper and his offensive game overall. Cauley-Stein is very raw on offense and has no real post up moves. Cauley-Stein shot just 50.8 percent from the free throw line. Cauley-Stein is not a great ball handler. Cauley-Stein will need to add weight and strength to his thin frame.

Projection: Willie Cauley-Stein has a lot of things that you can’t teach, and he’s only going to improve on the offensive end. Cauley-Stein is instantly a defensive stopper in the NBA and could become a cornerstone for a young team looking for direction. Cauley-Stein is easily a Top 10 pick for what he brings to the table now and his extremely high ceiling.
