Strengths: While not all healthy weight, Joshua Smith has elite size for the center position. Smith is powerful and physical, and he’s not going to get knocked out of position by anybody. Smith is a great rebounder and has improved as a shot blocker late in his career. Smith has soft hands around the rim gets much of his offense from easy put backs. Smith shot an OK 61.3 percent from the free throw line. Smith has improved his scoring ability in the post and usually takes his time in the paint. Joshua Smith doesn’t have any major off-the-court issues to worry about. Smith has yet to reach his full potential despite spending five years in college, including three years with the UCLA Bruins.
Weaknesses: Joshua Smith can seriously struggle with weight issues and has some major questions regarding his work ethic. Smith has discipline issues and some question how seriously he takes basketball. Smith can be turnover prone and needs to do a better job of defending without fouling. Smith needs to work on his post up moves and his offensive game overall. Smith is already 23 years old.
Projection: Joshua Smith probably would be a first round pick if he had a stronger work ethic and was much better conditioned. Now there’s a high chance Smith won’t be drafted at all. However, Smith’s size isn’t something that comes around every day and that should be enough to get him in a camp somewhere. We haven’t seen the last of Smith, as he’s somebody who could work his way onto an NBA roster in a couple of years once he sheds some pounds and takes ball seriously.
