NBA Player Updates 6/27: The Latest News from Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
June 27, 2015
The 2015 NBA Draft has officially completed, and now it’s time to start looking ahead to free agency, which begins in just a few days. With that in mind, let’s visit with the headlines this morning and see who’s in the news right now.
Cavaliers GM David Griffin confirmed this week what most people had suspected: star forward LeBron James has a direct hand in the team’s roster decisions.
Griffin says the team has heard from James “every day pretty much” and calls the input “great.”
The Cavaliers have some financial wrangling to do this off-season, with James included. He’s expected to opt out of his deal and likely re-sign on a one-year deal with a player option for the following season.

Another interesting contract negotiation is happening down in Miami. The Heat have been scrambling to figure out what’s going on with guard Dwyane Wade, who has until Monday to exercise his player option for 2015-16.
That option is worth $16.1 million, but as of right now it’s anyone’s guess what Wade’s going to do. Theories range from him returning to Miami to heading to Cleveland to help out LeBron and company.
Miami selected SF Justise Winslow with their 10th overall pick on Thursday. It was widely regarded as a home run at that slot, so there’s hope on the horizon in South Beach.
Let’s go back to the Cavs for a minute and check out the streaky J.R. Smith. In some recent comments, Griffin didn’t sound too anxious to re-sign Smith, who has opted out and will check into the free agent market.
Smith generally played well for the Cavaliers up until the NBA Finals, where he crashed and burned statistically.
Another big situation to keep an eye on is that of the Wizards’ Paul Pierce. The team seems to believe that he’ll remain in Washington on his player option, which will pay him an extra $1.1 million over last year.
That said, there are some persistent rumors that the Clippers and Celtics would love to pursue Pierce, who at 37 years old is entering the twilight of his career.
