NBA Player Updates 7/1: The Latest News from Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
July 1, 2015
It’s been a very busy past few days in the NBA, and it’s going to get nuts today with the opening of the free agency period. There’s lots to talk about today, so let’s get right to it and visit the headlines this morning.
The Pelicans inked forward Anthony Davis to a big extension late yesterday. The deal is worth $145 million over a five-year period.
Davis has blossomed into the franchise player everyone thought he’d be, logging 24.4 PPG with 10.2 RPG and 2.9 BPG last season in an All-Star campaign.

The Spurs also solidified a key piece in the last several hours. They inked up forward Kawhi Leonard on a five-year deal.
The contract is reported to be worth over $90 million. Leonard earned it last year in a season that won him the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. He posted 16.5 PPG and 7.2 RPG averages in that campaign.
The Blazers and free-agent forward Al-Farouq Aminu didn’t waste too much time agreeing to a deal once midnight hit.
Aminu signed a four-year deal worth $30 million with Portland. He’s coming off a season in Dallas last year where he managed 5.6 PPG and 4.6 RPG in 74 contests.
This morning we got a report that confirmed the Heat and guard Goran Dragic have agreed to a deal.
Dragic signed for five years and $90 million after opting out of his contract last week. Miami was apparently not kidding when they said they’d be aggressive in re-signing him.
Dragic posted 16.3 PPG last season in his time with the Suns and Heat.
The Lakers reportedly met with free agent LaMarcus Aldridge last night as soon as free agency opened at 12:01 Eastern. Word is that they were bringing a lot of heavy hitters to the meeting, including Kobe Bryant, James Worthy, Jeanie Buss, Mitch Kupchak and Byron Scott.
Aldridge is one of the biggest fish on the free agent market and will have no shortage of suitors, star power or no. That said, L.A. and San Antonio are said to be among the favorites to land him.
