NBA Trade Updates: Potential Moves and Hot Topic Players Involved in Trade Talks Right Now
January 23, 2016
We’ve got a big, big day ahead of us in the NBA (10 games), so this morning seems like a good time to check out some of the current trade rumors floating around out there. We’ve only got a few weeks left until the deadline, so we could see some of these moves coming to fruition. Here’s a closer look at some of the notable chatter in the headlines right now.
Lots of people are talking about Sacramento Kings forward Rudy Gay, and the team could be in sell-mode when we get a little closer to the trade deadline.
There are a few places that make sense for Gay to land. The Heat could be players, but they don’t necessarily have a whole lot of bargaining pieces other than rental contracts. Still, they could step up and shift some things around to make room.
The Celtics are also in the conversation; we could envision them giving up a big (Crowder, Olynyk or Sullinger) to get a big-time scorer like Gay.
Other teams being thrown around include the Wizards, Grizzlies and Pelicans, though it remains to be seen if any of those teams would offer enough to get Gay on the roster. We could see a bidding war emerge when we get closer to the deadline.

We’ve visited with Suns forward Markieff Morris a couple of times in this space, and his name keeps popping up all over the place.
That said, despite all the clashes with the coaching staff and his outspoken antics, Morris has a very good chance of not going anywhere at all. Sure, the Suns would like to jettison him for the sake of locker-room stability, but other teams know they’re in sell mode and probably won’t make any fair offers.
The team may keep him around if nothing of value comes along, but if given a remotely fair offer we’d still imagine they’ll pull the trigger in a heartbeat.
One big question mark surrounding the Pelicans is whether they’ll be buyers or sellers when it comes to the trade deadline. The team has been playing better lately and seems to be hitting its stride. If they keep it up they could eke into the postseason as a no. 7 or 8 seed.
That means it’s decision time for Pelicans brass. Will they trade for a player that can help them make that playoff push (and probably see the Warriors or Spurs in the first round), or will they focus more long-term and stockpile draft picks and up-and-coming players as they look toward the next couple of years? It’s a legitimate quandary, and how they perform over the next couple of weeks will go a long way toward finding the answer.
The Lakers are on the fast track to the top of the Draft Lottery, and they’re probably looking at a fire sale during Kobe’s swan song.
So who could L.A. be trading away? Brandon Bass, Roy Hibbert and Nick Young are the most likely to get moved, but none of those players is likely to have a ton of value on the trade market. Anything the team gets back would be a salary dump and may not even be worth it.
