The Connecticut Sun and Chicago Sky open their 2016 season Saturday night at the Allstate Arena.
The Connecticut Sun look for a successful season after missing the playoffs three straight years and winning just 15 games last season. The good news for the Sun is that they have a solid young core to help turn things around, led by Kelsey Bone and Alex Bentley, two players who averaged double-digit points last season. Alyssa Thomas has proven herself as a solid two-way player and the addition of UConn rookie Morgan Tuck gives the team much needed depth. The Connecticut Sun showed bright spots last season, it’s just a matter of putting things together and taking that next step. The Sun could be that sneaky team in the East this season.

The Chicago Sky have made the playoffs three straight seasons and hope to keep the momentum moving. It’s easy for the Sky to be a contender when they have the one of the best players in the world in Elena Delle Donne. Donne is capable of dropping 30 points any given night and putting the Sky on her back. Chicago is also more than a one-girl team, as Cappie Pondexter, Courtney Vandersloot and Allie Quigley all averaged double-digit points last season. The Chicago Sky are a scoring machine overall that had four players who made at least 24 threes last season. The issue for the Sky is getting stops on the defensive end, as a lot of scores resulted in the 80s for both teams, which is not championship quality.
I think the Sun have the potential to sneak into the playoffs this season with their young core, but compeiting with the Sky in the season opener on the road is a little rough. The Chicago Sky can run you out of the gym with their high powered offense led by the best pure scorer in the league.
Give me the Chicago Sky by double digits.
