The Phoenix Mercury and Minnesota Lynx open the season Saturday night at the Target Center on ESPN.
The Phoenix Mercury enter the season once again as one of the top candidates to win the WNBA Finals. The Mercury have depth with their key trio of DeWanna Bonner, Brittney Griner and Candice Dupree leading the way. Griner is easily one of the top players in the league and gives Phoenix the chance to win each night when on the court. Also, the Mercury get back Diana Taurasi, who missed all of last season due to being overseas. With Taurasi back in the mix, the Phoenix Mercury are as loaded of a team you’re going to find in the WNBA. The last time the Mercury were at full strength, they finished with a 29-5 record and won the WNBA Finals.
USA TODAY Sports
The Minnesota Lynx return to the court after winning two of the last three WNBA Finals. Along with the Mercury, the Lynx are considered the favorites to once again hoist the trophy at the end of the season. Led by Maya Moore, Sylvia Fowles and Seimone Augustus, the Lynx have one of the most versatile and best trio in the league. Lindsay Whalen was Minnesota’s fourth double-digit scorer last season and Rebekkah Brunson is a rebounding machine who provides depth. The Minnesota Lynx are as scary as a WNBA team can get, and they’ve won seven of their last nine regular season home games.
This is going to be an emotional game for the Lynx with the banner and the celebrations taking place before tipoff. And while Minnesota is at home and has the talent to wipe the floor with any team in the league, the Mercury are no pushovers. With Taurasi back, Phoenix is probably the best team in the WNBA on paper.
I'll gladly take my free points in a game the Mercury can win outright.
