The United States and Spain meet Friday in the semifinals of the men’s basketball tournament in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
The United States hopes to reach the gold medal game for the third straight olympics. In the 105-78 victory over Argentina, the United States shot 46 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc. The US allowed 38 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent shooting from deep. Kevin Durant led the way with 27 points and six assists while Paul George had 17 points and eight rebounds. Demarcus Cousins was the third double-digit scorer and Kyle Lowry grabbed six rebounds. The United States finally looked like the team we expected to see all tournament, but it still had to erase a double-digit first quarter deficit. The US has shown when it plays to its potential, it’s nearly unbeatable.

Spain also looked to reach its third straight gold medal game with a victory. In the 92-67 victory over France, Spain shot 52.2 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from beyond the arc. Spain allowed 38.7 percent shooting from the field and 42.9 percent shooting from deep. Nikola Mirotić led the way with 23 points and two assists while Willy Hernangómez had 18 points and six rebounds. Sergio Llull was the third double-digit scorer and Pau Gasol grabbed eight rebounds. Spain has now won four straight games since starting the tournament 0-2, and they’re a confident bunch given its scored no less than 92 points in those contests. Spain has to hit the outside shot in order to have a chance here.
Spain has lost the last two olympic finals to the United States by a combined 18 points, so you can expect a tight contest here. However, the US has too much firepower and when it wants to turn things up it can, as you saw in the first quarter against Argentina.
Team USA will be prepared for this contest as it may be its toughest all tournament, and I like the Americans by 15 points.
