The NBA season kicks off with the New York Knicks taking on the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Quicken Loans Arena on Tuesday night.
The Knicks have been out of playoff contention for quite some time now, but it seems like all that is about to change as Knicks president Phil Jackson made some moves in the offseason, adding Brandon Jennings, Courtney Lee, Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose to help perennial scorer in Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis who is coming off a stellar rookie season. The Knicks are suddenly contenders in the Eastern Conference but should expect some early-season growing pains as they showed plenty of defensive flaws in the preseason and had to practice without Rose who was fighting rape charges in court.

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers will be entering the season as the defending champions for the first time in franchise history. LeBron James re-signed a three-year $100M contract to make him the highest paid player in the NBA while the ink is still drying on JR Smith’s four-year $57M contract which means that the Cavs’ roster remains largely intact except for Matthew Dellavedova went to the Milwaukee Bucks. All signs point towards the Cavs sitting atop the Eastern Conference standings come playoff time and anything less would be a major disappointment.
Head to head, the Knicks are 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings overall and 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings in Cleveland, while the under is 7-0 in the last seven meetings.
The Knicks will be making some noise in the playoffs this season but as I mentioned before, I am expecting some troubles early on. This seems like too many points for a season opener, but the Cavs are a settled outfit and should hit the ground running and take full advantage of a Knicks team still trying to figure out how to play together.
