The Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies open the 2016-17 NBA season Wednesday night at the FedexForum.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have become the trendy pick this year to make a leap towards the playoffs with all their young talent and now a head coach in Tom Thibodeau leading the way. The Timberwolves are loaded with potential led by Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine and Ricky Rubio. Kris Dunn is a Rookie of the year candidate and Shabazz Muhammad is a double-digit scorer off the bench. This could be the year the Timberwolves make that playoff push but with a roster that has seven players 25 years old or younger, I’m always hesitant to pull the trigger. We’ll find out early if the Timberwolves are ready for the big stage. The Minnesota Timberwolves have won three of their last four regular season openers.

The Memphis Grizzlies also have a new head coach in David Fizdale and hope he can get this franchise over the hump. The Grizzlies return their main core of Marc Gasol, Mike Conley and Tony Allen that’s made them a consistent playoff team over the years. The big splash for the Grizzlies was adding Chandler Parsons, as the weakness for Memphis has always been outside shooting. If Parsons can stay healthy and hit the deep ball with consistency, the Grizzlies could be a dangerous team this season. The Grizzlies just need to find outside shooting to go along with their scrappy defensive style. The Memphis Grizzlies have lost four of their last five regular season openers. Parsons, Allen, Jarell Martin and Brandan Wright are questionable.
The Timberwolves are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Grizzlies are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Timberwolves are 4-9 ATS in the last 13 meetings in Memphis and 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings overall.
I want to beleive in the Timberwolves and think they're going to have a solid season, but I need to see it first before thinking they can hang with a playoff, veteran team on the road. If you're taking the small number with Minnesota, you think the Timberwolves can win this game against a scrappy Grizzlies team. I'm not there yet. Give me Memphis and the small line at home.
