The Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies meet Monday in NBA preseason action at the FedExForum.
The Orlando Magic enter another year under coach Frank Vogel, and there’s some stability this season with the starting five returning as well. The Magic are still one of the younger teams in the league with their whole starting unit under 27 years old, but guys such as Elfrid Payton, Evan Fournier and Aaron Gordon hope this is the year they can start tapping into their full potential. As for the preseason, the Orlando Magic have a boatload of new players they need to ease into the rotation, including Jonathon Simmons, Shelvin Mack, Marreese Speights and Florida State rookie Jonathan Isaac. Depth will be key if the Magic are going to improve on last years 29 victories, so bench players need to prove they can contribute in long stretches. The Magic have six preseason games to get that done.
The Memphis Grizzlies head into the season a bit younger than previous years, as there’s no more Zach Randolph, Vince Carter or Tony Allen. It’s all about trying to build a team coach David Fizdale is comfortable with and can mold his own identity. Of course, the main contributors for the Grizzlies are still around such as Mike Conley, Marc Gasol and Chandler Parsons, but you can expect the youth to chip in more this season. That starts with Andrew Harrison, James Ennis, Jarell Martin and even California rookie Ivan Rabb. Former Oregon star Dillon Brooks is also a player to watch due to his shotmaking ability. The Memphis Grizzlies have had the same look for years and while it’s resulted in playoff trips and successful seasons, they seem to finally be turning the corner to a new approach in hopes of being a true contender at some point.
The Magic are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 Monday games and the over is 5-1-1 in Magic last 7 overall. The Grizzlies are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall and the over is 4-0 in Grizzlies last 4 overall. The Magic are 4-11 ATS in the last 15 meetings in Memphis and the under is 11-2 in the last 13 meetings in Memphis.
Certain teams are going to take the preseason seriously, and when you have a coach such as David Fizdale, a hardnosed coach, the Memphis Grizzlies are going to be one of those teams. Also, we saw the Grizzlies get the most out of some of their bench players last year. The Magic are a young club still going through the motions. At home, the Grizz should be able to get the victory here and cover the small number.
