The Charlotte Hornets and Detroit Pistons meet Wednesday in NBA preseason action at the Little Caesars Arena.
The Charlotte Hornets are coming off a Monday road loss to the Boston Celtics, 94-82. In the losing effort, the Hornets shot just 37.5 percent from the field and turned the ball over 19 times. Kemba Walker led Charlotte with 12 points and three assists while Nicolas Batum had 10 points and two assists. Jeremy Lamb chipped in 17 points off the bench and Frank Kaminsky grabbed four rebounds in 21 minutes. Consistent offense has been an issue for the Hornets in the past and preseason or not, their opener doesn’t exactly provide confidence moving forward. It can’t just be a back-and-forth between Kemba and Batum if the Hornets hope to eventually get over the hump in the East as just another average / subpar team. The Charlotte Hornets open their preseason with three straight road games.

The Detroit Pistons hope to take a step forward after just 37 wins last season and falling short of a playoff berth. The Pistons return their core of Tobias Harris, Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson, but the addition of two-way guard Avery Bradley was a really nice pickup and will fit well with what Stan Van Gundy likes to run. Throw in another season of young small forward Stanley Johnson, and the Pistons have a nice group of players who should be better than what last years record indicates. It’s just a matter of staying healthy and finding guys who can create for others on the offensive side of the court. The Detroit Pistons open the preseason with three straight home games.
The Hornets are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall and the over is 10-2 in Hornets last 12 overall. The Pistons are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 Wednesday games and the under is 9-1 in Pistons last 10 home games. The over is 20-6-1 in the last 27 meetings in Detroit and 19-7-1 in the last 27 meetings.
Even in the preseason, both of these teams are defensive first and can go stretches where the offense is ice cold. Heck, we saw it with the Hornets in their first preseason game, scoring just 82 points. Playing a Stan Van Gundy team shouldn't be any easier on the offensive end. This total seems a tad bit too high given the way both of these clubs play so instead of playing with the side, I'll take the under in this spot.
