The Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets meet Thursday in NBA preseason action at the Barclays Center.
The Miami Heat won their preseason opener Sunday against the Atlanta Hawks, 96-90. In the victory, the Heat allowed just 35.6 percent shooting while knocking down 48.6 percent of their shots. Tyler Johnson led the Heat with 14 points and three rebounds while Josh Richardson produced 12 points and two assists. Rodney McGruder was the third double-digit scorer and Hassan Whiteside grabbed 11 rebounds in 19 minutes. The Heat allowed such a low shooting percentage despite 22 turnovers, giving the Hawks 87 field goal attempts. The Miami Heat wanted to establish their defensive identity this preseason and you have to be impressed with what you saw opening night. It’s now about cleaning up those turnovers, as you won’t win much turning the ball over 20-plus times a night.

The Brooklyn Nets won their preseason opener Tuesday against the New York Knicks, 115-107. In the victory, the Nets shot 43.7 percent from the field and made 16 threes. D'Angelo Russell led the Nets with 19 points and four assists while Sean Kilpatrick had 15 points and four rebounds. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson was another double-digit scorer and Trevor Booker grabbed 13 rebounds in 21 minutes. The Nets had seven double-digit scorers in their preseason victory and 20 assists on 38 made baskets. Preseason or not, the Nets were quite impressive in their victory, especially for a team that has a lot of new faces. It’s now about sustaining that success and proving it wasn’t a fluke, as not many people are high on these Brooklyn Nets this season.
The Heat are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games playing on 3 or more days rest and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games. The under is 9-2 in Heat last 11 road games and 3-0-1 in Nets last 4 overall. The Heat are 18-6 ATS in the last 24 meetings in Brooklyn, 12-3-1 ATS in the last 16 meetings and the under is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.
Regardless if it's the regular season, postseason or preseason, I rarely leave points on the table with the better team. The Nets looked sharp in their opener and are at home, but the Heat aren't the Knicks. The Heat have more talent than the Nets and are lightyears the better coached team as well. I'll gladly take the free bucket with the better team, as that's a good way to make money longterm in this line of work.
