The Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat meet Monday in NBA preseason action at the AmericanAirlines Arena.
The Charlotte Hornets are 1-1 in preseason play and will play their third straight road game. In the Hornets win over the Detroit Pistons, the Hornets shot 43 percent from the field and made 11 threes. Dwight Howard led the Hornets with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Jeremy Lamb had 18 points and four assists. Frank Kaminsky was the third double-digit scorer and Cody Zeller grabbed four rebounds. The Charlotte Hornets have to keep finding reliable offensive players now that Nicolas Batum is expected to be sidelined for a while. Rookie Malik Monk, who dropped 19 in the Hornets last game, is the key player who must immediately prove he deserves serious playing time, as his shotmaking ability will be key this season with so many limited playmakers on this Charlotte roster.
The Miami Heat look to snap back-to-back losses and get to a .500 record in preseason play. In the Heat’s loss to the Orlando Magic, Miami shot 36.4 percent from the field and turned the ball over 15 times. Hassan Whiteside led the Heat with 17 points and 15 rebounds while Josh Richardson Fox had 19 points and four assists. Dion Waiters was the third double-digit scorer and James Johnson grabbed four rebounds. The Miami Heat had their starters perform well in their last preseason game, but you’re not going to win many games shooting well under 40 percent from the field. The Heat have now scored 96 or less points in all three preseason games, and while they’re a defensive first club, the offense has to improve quite a bit if this season is going to be as successful as many folks in Miami hope.
The over is 6-0 in Hornets last 6 games following a ATS win. The Heat are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games playing on 1 days rest, 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a straight up loss and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games. The over is 11-3 in the last 14 meetings in Miami and the under is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.
The Miami Heat are the better and deeper basketball team between the two, and they usually play really well at home. The Hornets are likely to struggle on the offensive side with limited options, and a third straight road game does tend to create tired legs, even in the preseason. I'll side with the Heat and the reasonable line.
