The Boston Celtics travel to the Wells Fargo Center to take on the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night.
The Boston Celtics will be hoping to avoid falling into an early 0-3 to start the season after falling to the Bucks by 108-100 on Wednesday. Playing just one night after losing Gordon Hayward to injury, the Celtics showed plenty of fight in the third quarter where they outscored the Bucks by 27-18 to take a four-point lead going into the fourth, but they had no answer for the Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo who torched them for 16 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter. Jaylen Brown led the team in scoring with 18 points, Terry Rozier chipped in with 15 points and six assists off the bench but Kyrie Irving shot just seven of 25 from the field to finish with 17 points as the Celtics shot just 42 percent from the field.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia76ers will be aiming for their first home win of the season after falling to the Wizards by 120-115 in their season opener. Robert Covington drained seven 3-pointers to lead the team with 29 points, Joel Embiid added 18 points with 13 rebounds while Ben Simmons impressed with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. As a team, the 76ers shot 46 percent from the field and 15 of 35 from the 3-point line, but they had answer for the Wizards’ John Wall who took over in the second half deliver the 76ers their first loss of the season.
Looking at the betting trends, the Celtics are 4-0 ATS in their last four games, 9-3 ATS in their last 12 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game and 1-7 ATS in their last eight games against a team below .400. Meanwhile, the 76ers are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games against a team with a losing record, 35-17 ATS in their last 52 games overall and 0-5 ATS in their last five home games.
Head to head, the road team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings, the over is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings in Philadelphia and the Celtics are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings overall.
The 76ers will be eager to impress in their first home game of the season, but with Embiid playing with a minutes restriction, it’s always hard to feel comfortable with your money on the 76ers. Instead, I’m going with the struggling Celtics who should come out firing as they won’t want to fall behind 0-3 to start the season. Give me the road team Celtics to come away with the minor upset behind a big night from Irving.
