The Los Angeles Clippers and the New Orleans Pelicans do battle at the Smoothie King Center on Saturday night.
The Los Angeles Clippers started their season with four straight wins but they’ve since cooled off with five losses in their last six games. In Tuesday’s 120-107 loss at San Antonio, Austin Rivers led the team with 24 points, Lou Williams added 17 points off the bench while Blake Griffin finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists. As a team, the Clippers shot 51 percent from the field and 11 of 30 from the three-point line but they just couldn’t recover after getting outscored by 40-21 in the third quarter where they committed six turnovers. Danilo Gallinari sat out the game with a strained left glute while Patrick Beverley remains out with a sore right knee.
Meanwhile, the New Orleans Pelicans were aiming for a fourth straight victory on Thursday but they ran into the Raptors who beat them by 122-118. Jrue Holiday led the team with his best game of the season, pouring in 34 points on 14 of 20 shooting to go with five rebounds and 11 assists. DeMarcus Cousins added 20 points with 15 rebounds and five assists while Anthony Davis chipped in with 18 points. As a team, the Pelicans shot 54 percent from the field and 13 of 31 from the three-point line but they let themselves down on the defensive end as the Raptors were able to drain a season-high 16 three-pointers. With the loss, New Orleans falls back to 6-6 on the season and 5-3 on the road.
Looking at the betting trends, the Clippers are 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games, 1-4 ATS in their last five games playing on zero days’ rest and 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall. Meanwhile, the Pelicans are 5-1 ATS in their last six games following a road trip of seven or more days and 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall.
Head to head, the over is 15-6 in the last 21 meetings in New Orleans, the Clippers are 12-25 ATS in the last 37 meetings overall and 5-16 ATS in the last 21 meetings in New Orleans.
The Clippers will be eager to snap out of their funk and avoid a fourth straight loss, but they’re shorthanded and really struggling to compete so I don't like their chances against an improving Pelicans team who are starting to string together some wins. Not in love with this pick, but the Pelicans to cover this modest spread at home seems like the play in this one.
