The Memphis Grizzlies and the Utah Jazz do battle at the Vivint Smart Home Arena on Friday night.
The Memphis Grizzlies have lost 23 of their last 26 games but they will be actually be aiming for a third straight win after taking down the red-hot Trailblazers in a 108-103 upset on Wednesday. MarShon Brooks led the team with 21 points in just 21 minutes of action off the bench, Dillon Brooks added 18 points while Chandler Parson chipped in with 15 points. As a team, the Grizzlies shot 48 percent from the field and 13 of 25 from the three-point line but they really couldn’t gain any ascendancy in the game until the fourth quarter where MarShon Brooks scored 14 of his 21 points to help the Grizzlies pull off the unlikely upset against the Trailblazers who were without their best player in Damian Lillard. With the win, Memphis improved to 21-54 overall and 15-24 at home.
Meanwhile, the Utah Jazz have been in great form as they’ve won 11 of their last 14 games but they will be looking to bounce back after falling to the shorthanded Celtics in a 97-94 home loss on Wednesday. Donovan Mitchell led the team with 22 points and six assists, Jae Crowder added 16 points off the bench while Ricky Rubio chipped in with 14 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists. As a team, the Jazz shot 41 percent from the field and nine of 33 from the three-point line as they went on a 15-0 run in the third quarter to lead by as many as 11 points but they went ice-cold when it matters most as the Celtics closed the game on a 9-0 run to steal the game. With the loss, Utah dropped to 42-33 overall which is good for eighth place in the Western Conference standings.
Looking at the betting trends, the Grizzlies are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games following a win, 4-9 ATS in their last 13 road games and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Friday games. Meanwhile, the Jazz are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following a loss, 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games against a team below .400 and 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
Head to head, the under is 20-8 in the last 28 meetings and the Grizzlies are 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
The Jazz have been playing some of their best basketball of the season and they really need this win to stay in the playoff picture, but these Grizzlies have suddenly found a bit of form despite having so little to play for at this stage of the season. I expect the Jazz to bounce back with a win as they’ll be kicking themselves after losing at home to a Celtics team missing Al Horford and Kyrie Irving, but I think the Grizzlies do just enough to hang around and keep the final score respectable.
