The New Orleans Pelicans pay a visit to the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Chesapeake Energy Arena on Monday.
The New Orleans Pelicans kicked off their season with four straight wins but they’ve had no success in their recent string of games as they’re now hoping to avoid a sixth straight loss after falling to the Spurs in a 109-95 road loss on Saturday. Jrue Holiday led the team with 29 points and eight assists while Nikola Mirotic added 22 points with 16 rebounds, but the Pelicans needed much more from Anthony Davis who chipped in with 17 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in his return from a one-game absence. As a team, the Pelicans shot 46 percent from the field and just six of 21 from the three-point line but they were always fighting a losing battle after falling behind by 58-39 going into halftime.
Meanwhile, the Oklahoma City Thunder will be aiming for a fifth straight win after blowing past the struggling Wizards in a 134-111 road win on Friday. Russell Westbrook led the team with 23 points, 12 rebounds and four assists, Jerami Grant added 22 points while Paul George chipped in with 17 points and seven assists. As a team, the Thunder shot a healthy 57 percent from the field and 15 of 32 from the three-point line as they put the game to bed early with a dominant 44-20 second quarter effort to take an unassailable 29-point lead going into halftime. Grant played 34 minutes but no one else played their usual allotment of minutes as the win was locked up early.
Looking at the betting trends, the Pelicans are 16-7 ATS in their last 23 road games, 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a loss of more than 10 points and 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall. The Thunder are 5-0 ATS in their last five games following a win, 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 home games and 0-4-1 ATS in their last five games playing on two days rest.
Head to head, the favorite is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings and the Pelicans are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings.
Here we have two teams headed in different directions as the Pelicans are looking to snap a five-game skid while the Thunder are aiming for a fifth straight win. I keep thinking the Pelicans will snap out of their funk with a win, but four of their five losses have been by double-digits so they haven’t been that close. With that being said, the Thunder are surging right now and they will be well-rested coming into this one, so I’m taking them to get another win and cover here.
