Slovenia and Germany meet Monday night in the 2020 Olympics Basketball Quarterfinal at the Saitama Super Arena. Slovenia swept its group and is riding a nine-game winning streak overall. Germany finished 1-2 through three games but its in the knockout stages for the first time since 1992.

Slovenia is 9-0 since June and is coming off an impressive win over Spain. In the winning effort, Slovenia shot 41.9 percent from the field and 31.6 percent from three. Vlatko Cancar led Slovenia with 22 points and two rebounds while Mike Tobey had 16 points and 14 rebounds. Klemen Prepelic was the third double-digit scorer and Luka Doncic grabbed 14 rebounds. Defensively, Slovenia allowed 37.7 percent shooting from the field and 36.4 percent shooting from three. Slovenia showed it’s far more than Doncic, as the NBA star struggled with foul trouble and it didn’t matter. Doncic was the fourth-leading scorer for Slovenia and only had seven field goal attempts. Slovenia is showing time and time again that it’s a legit threat to make a run for the gold medal game.

Germany lost to Italy and Australia, but its win over Nigeria was able to force an advance. In the losing effort, Germany shot 41.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three. Andreas Obst led Germany with 17 points and one assist while Niels Giffey had 11 points and four rebounds. Johannes Thiemann was the third double-digit scorer and Joshiko Saibou grabbed two rebounds. Defensively, Germany allowed 50 percent shooting from the field and 34.4 percent shooting from three. Germany has had issues with sustaining success in these games, as it fell apart in the fourth quarter against Italy and lost to the Aussies after being up four at the end of the first. Germany has shown it can compete, it’s just about playing all four quarters and knowing how to close out games.

Germany has won two of the three meetings against Slovenia. However, it was Slovenia who won the most recent meeting against the Germans, which came in the 2007 Eurobasket second stage.

This is a quick turnaround for Slovenia, but the good news is it didn’t have to play Doncic into the ground due to foul trouble. As good as the flashes from Germany have been, the consistency has been an issue. Thick number, but it’s hard to take the Germans seriously against the big boys. It’s also even tougher to bet against Slovenia, arguably the team that’s looked the best through three games.

I’ll lay the chalk with Slovenia.
