The New Orleans Pelicans and the Phoenix Suns collide in Game 1 at the Footprint Center on Sunday night.

The New Orleans Pelicans are the clear underdogs in this series, but they are coming into this one with plenty of confidence after booking their spot in the playoffs with a 105-101 road win over the Clippers on Friday. Brandon Ingram led the team with 30 points, six rebounds and six assists, CJ McCollum added 19 points while Larry Nance Jr. and Trey Murphy each scored 14 points. As a team, the Pelicans shot 48 percent from the field and a miserly six of 22 from the 3-point line as they leaked 38 points in the third quarter to trail by as many as 13 points, but they stayed in the fight and held the Clippers to just 17 points in the fourth quarter to escape with the narrow win.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix Suns have been the benchmark of the league all season as they dominated most of the season to earn the top seed with a 64-18 overall record. Devin Booker led the team with averages of 26.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game, DeAndre Ayton averaged 17.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, Chris Paul scored 14.7 points and 10.8 assists per game while Mikal Bridges played all 82 games and averaged 14.2 points per game. As a team, the Suns scored 114.8 points per game while shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from the 3-point line.

Looking at the betting trends, the Pelicans are 13-5 ATS in their last 18 road games, 1-5 ATS in their last six games against a team with a winning record and 1-4 ATS in their last five games against a team above .600. The Suns are 1-4 ATS in their last five games against a team with a losing record, 7-2 ATS in their last nine games playing on three or more days’ rest and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall.

Head to head, the over is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings overall, the Pelicans are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings overall and the Pelicans are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Phoenix.

The Pelicans had to clinch the 8th seed the hard way thanks to impressive wins over the Spurs and the Clippers in the Play-In tournament, but they’re going to have to be at their best against this Suns team who have been the benchmark of the league all season. The Pelicans have already beaten the Suns once this season, but they’ve also lost three meetings, all of which were blowouts. The Pelicans should be able to hang around for most of the game, but in the end, I have the well-rested Suns pulling away for the win and cover behind a big game from Booker.
