The Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks meet Tuesday in preseason NBA action at Madison Square Garden. The Detroit Pistons have split their last 8 preseason games. The New York Knicks have won their last 6 preseason games.
The Detroit Pistons won 23 games last year and enter the fifth season under coach Dwane Casey. The Pistons continue to try to take steps in the right direction as they create an exciting, young core. Cade Cunningham is coming off an impressive rookie season, while players such as Jaden Ivey and Saddiq Bey look promising. Marvin Bagley III is coming off possibly his best season, and he still has untapped potential, while the addition of Bojan Bogdanovic provides leadership and shotmaking. Throw in Killian Hayes, Hamidou Diallo and Isaiah Livers, and the Pistons have oodles of young talent. If these players can hit the ground running together, the Pistons are on the fast track to make some serious noise as early as next year.
The New York Knicks won 37 games last year and enter the third season under coach Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks made one of the bigger offseason moves with the addition of Jalen Brunson, and it will be interesting to see if he can build on his playoff efforts with the Mavericks. RJ Barrett got his big contract, while Immanuel Quickley and Obi Toppin hope to take that next step in their third years. However, in order for the Knicks to be taken seriously, Julius Randle has to get back to the player he was a couple of years ago. Randle’s efficiency fell off a cliff last season, and that has to change. The Knicks still have a lack of top end talent, but they’re a sneaky playoff team in the East if things break right.
The Pistons are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 road games and 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games overall. The Knicks are 12-3 ATS in their last 15 Tuesday games and 3-11 ATS in their last 14 home games. The over is 4-0 in Pistons last 4 overall. The under is 4-0 in Knicks last 4 overall. The Pistons are 9-25 ATS in the last 34 meetings in New York and 1-7 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
The New York Knicks are going to get the benefit of the doubt at home, and I guess they’re the better team on paper. However, the Detroit Pistons are loaded with youth and raw talent, and preseason games are where teams like this usually shine. There’s playing time available, and there’s oodles of young kids eager to prove themselves. That creates competition and often an aggressive style of play that leads to good showings. Give me the Pistons and the points.
