San Diego Chargers vs. Seattle Seahawks Free Pick- 8/8/13

The San Diego Chargers and the Seattle Seahawks close out Thursday’s NFL Preseason action as they meet in San Diego.

At one point, the San Diego Chargers were the favorites seemingly every year to be the AFC representative in the Super Bowl, but now they haven’t made the playoffs in two years. Phillip Rivers has one of the quickest releases in football, but he takes a lot of chances and a tip here and there and the bounces usually don’t go his way. Charlie Whitehurst is his backup, followed by Brad Sorenson on the depth chart. Ryan Mathews hasn’t really lived up to expectations in the backfield and Danny Woodhead has been brought in as the backup, but Ronnie Bitemn should contribute and Edwin Baker will get a chance. Malcolm Floyd and Danario Alexander are listed as the starting wide receivers, but with Vincent Bitemn, Eddie Royal, Robert Meacham, and rookie Keenan Allen all on the roster, expect some of the more heated competition for a starting slot here. Antonio Gates is still a top tight end, but he hasn’t been healthy for a while now and Ladarius Green, John Phillips, and Dallas Walker will all get serious looks.

The Chargers defense always seems to be missing pieces, but on paper at least it is a formidable unit. Corey Liuget and Kendall Reyes are the ends and Cam Thomas is in the middle, while Jarius Wynn, Damik Scaife, and Byron Jerideau are the backups. When Melvin Ingram tore his ACL, the Chargers acquired Dwight Freeney, who, along with Donald Butler, Jarret Johnson, and Manti Te’o, will make make up the starting unit, while former number one pick Larry English is among the backups. Derek Cox and Marcus Gilchrist are the corners and Brandon Taylor and defensive leader Eric Weddle are the safties in an area where the Chargers will be tested all season long.

The Seattle Seahawks were a playoff team a year ago and many have even bigger expectations for them this season. Russell Wilson is in entrenched as the starting QB, while Brady Quinn and Tarvaris Jackson are the backups. Marshawn Lynch is a workhorse at running back, but Seattle used their first round pick to add depth, taking Christin Michael out of Texas A&M. Sidney Rice is a star at receiver, but Golden Tate doesn’t get many passes and Doug Baldwin has proven to be capable, but expect the Seahawks to look for more help in this spot. Zach Miller is at tight end and Luke Wilson and Sean McGrath are the backups.

The Seahawks love to rush the passer and Cliff Avril will be counted on to do that, and while Bruce Irvin and Chris Clemons are listed down the depth chart, they are a proven commodity in that area. On the DL, Red Bryant, Tany McDaniel, and Brandone Mebane are part of the starting unit, while Michael Bennett and Jesse Williams are also part of a deep and talented unit. Bobby Wagner is at MLB, with K.J. Wright on one side and Heath Farwell on the other and it is again a deep group with Mike Morgan, Ty Powell, Malcom Smith and at least five more all looking for playing time. The Seahawks have one of the best secondaries in football, with Richard Sherman, Brandon Bitemner, Kam Chancellor, and Earl Thomas, but we know they are going to need help from Antoine Winfield, Walter Thurmond, Chris Maragos, Jeremy Lane or one of the many other DB’s on the roster.

Neither of these teams have much to work with when it comes to backup QB’s, but I like the Chargers running back group better. I also don’t see Brady Quinn or Tarvaris Jackson as viable options and I look for the Chargers to get the best of this one since those are the players likely to be counted on the most.
