The New Orleans Saints and the Kansas City Chiefs face off on Friday in New Orleans as they kick off their 2013 NFL preseason schedules.
The New Orleans Saints missed the playoffs last season and it ended their season of turmoil filled with suspensions, including that of head Coach Sean Payton, who returns to the sidelines this year. Drew Brees is back at QB and the Saints have a host of backups, including Seneca Wallace, Luke McCown, and Ryan Griffin. Mark Ingram starts at running back, while Darren Sproles plays plenty and Pierre Thomas and Travaris Cadet, Lance Moore and Marques Colston are the starting wide receivers, but Brees spreads it around and they have Chris Givens, Courtney Roby, Nick Toon, Kenny Stills and others all looking for playing time. Jimmy Graham is Brees’ favorite target and Benjamin Watson still has something left in the tank.

The Saints defense is surely to be tested this season and if the offense scores or doesn’t, it's a quick strike offense that isn’t on the field long. Cameron Jordan and Akiem Hicks are on the defensive line as the Saints are looking at many others, including Greg Romeus, John Jenkins, Kenyon Coleman, Broderick Bunkley and more. Will Smith and Victor Butler, along with Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne, are the linebackers but Martez Wilson, Jonathan Vilma, Junior Galette are all guys who can play and the Saints are four deep right now across the board. Keenan Lewis and Jabari Greer are the corners and Kenny Vaccaro and Roman Harper are the safeties as Patrick Robinson has been moved to backup and Malcolm Jenkins and Jim Leonhard are part of the next units as well.
The Kansas City Chiefs are team looking for a fresh start, with several of the key personnel looking for a new start, including Head Coach Andy Reid. Alex Smith takes over at QB after an up and down career in San Francisco and he’s backed up by Chase Daniel, Tyler Bray, and Ricky Stanzi. Jamaal Charles is a year past his injury and rookie Knile Davis is listed as the current number two in front of Shaun Draughn and Cyrus Gray. Dwayne Bowe and Donnie Avery are listed as the starting receivers and hopes are Jon Baldwin, Dexter McCluster, and others can make a big contribution. Tony Moeaki is somewhat underrated at tight end and he is backed up by Anthony Fasano, Travis Kelce, and Kevin Brock.
There are a lot of high draft choices in the Chiefs’ defense and the hopes are they have the right pieces in the right places this year. Tyson Jackson, Dontari Poe, and Mike DeVito are the starters on the DL, with Allen Bailey, Marcus Dixon, Anthony Toribio are the second unit or three. Tambi Hali is a force at LB and he’ll play next to Akeem Jordon, while Justin Houston and Derrick John are on the other side, and behind them, Nico Johnson Frank Zombo, and others are waiting in the wings. Eric Berry is one of the better safeties in the NFL and Kendrick Lewis plays next to him, while Brandon Flowers and Sean Smith are capable corners and Dunta Robinson, Husain Abdullah, Sanders Commings are all part of the depth chart.
Both of these teams have something to prove after disappointing campaigns a year ago, and while the Chiefs should be much better than they were last season, the Saints just have better depth right now and it should show here.
