Chicago Bears vs. San Diego Chargers Free Pick- 8/15/13

The Chicago Bears and the San Diego Chargers meet on Thursday at Soldier Field for a week two preseason NL Matchup.

The Chicago Bears didn’t open the Marc Trestman Era the way they had hoped, as they lost to the Panthers, but like 16 of the 32 NFL teams they will remind themselves that these games don’t count. While the Bears’ game against the Panthers was close in every way it was a turnover that ended up being the difference. Jay Cutler completed 6 of 8 passes with an interception while being sacked once while Josh McCown looked lost going 3 for 8 but Matt Blanchard went 15 fro 18 but like a typical Bears QB in recent years he ran for his life while being sacked five times. Matt Forte carried the ball just once as did Michael Bush as Michael Ford had six carries averaging 2.5 yards per and scoring a touchdown. Marques Wilson led the Chicago receivers with four catches while Joe Anderson, Devin Aromashadou, and Gabe Miller had two catches each as the Bears spread it around. Defensively the Bears allowed 292 yards and Kaseem Greene had five tackles, C.J. Wilson, Nate Collins, and Lawrence Wilson each had four tackles and Jon Bostic returned an interception for a touchdown and Lance Briggs had three tackles. Clearly pass protection is something the Bears will need to work on.

First year Head Coach Mike McCoy was hoping for a better result from the San Diego Chargers in week one of the NFL Preseason but the Chargers were blasted by the Seattle Seahawks. QB Phillip Rivers was 5 for 6 for 45 yards in very limited action but Charlie Whitehurst was miserable completing 7 of 15 passes for 59 yards while being intercepted twice and sacked three times. The Chargers claim to be going with the “hot hand” at running back and it’s clearly Ryan Mathews who averaged 6.3 yards per carry while Fozzy Whitaker saw the bulk of the carries averaging just 2.7 yards. Dan DePalma led the Chargers receivers with five catches while Keenan Allen had two catches and Antonio Gates, Eddie Royal, and Malcolm Floyd each had a catch. The Chargers offense only netted 238 yards with the defense allowing 339. Defensively Sean Cattouse had seven tackles, D.J. Smith had five tackles while Eric Weddle had two tackles and Corey Luiget had a tackle. One of the bigger stories surrounding the Chargers is wide receiver Robert Meacham who is invisible and may not make the roster especially with his gigantic salary.

Just about every team in both of the divisions these two play in, the AFC West and the NFC North, lost last week so it seems like whole lot of nothing being shown as far as their hand or effort wise and we will need to note if that continues this week but something has to give here. Until the Bears can figure out a way to block someone they are going to have trouble winning.
