NFL Updates: Geno Smith, Revis and More
August 14, 2013
With the second round of preseason games set to get started tomorrow, it’s a good time to take a step back and analyze some of the recent headlines from around the NFL. There’s been plenty of activity brewing all around the league recently, so let’s take a closer look at what’s happening. Here’s the latest.
Geno Smith, QB, New York Jets: Smith continues to look better and better with each passing day--health-wise, that is. He’s dealing with a sprained ankle, injured in last Friday’s preseason opener against the Lions. Smith was able to do some scrambling and cutting during practice yesterday and visually looks back to his old self.
As far as Saturday’s game against the Jaguars, we’re still waiting for word from Rex Ryan on who will be the starting QB--Smith or the embattled incumbent Mark Sanchez. The two are currently locked in an open competition to start Week 1.

Trent Richardson, RB, Cleveland Browns: It looks like Richardson will be making his 2013 preseason debut tomorrow night against Detroit. Word broke yesterday that he’d be getting the nod, which is good news for Browns fans following his absence in the team’s preseason opener.
Richardson has been battling a shin injury throughout camp, and the team is being extra cautious with its most valuable weapon. He’s expected to play a couple of series tomorrow night before coming out of the game.
Darrelle Revis, CB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Revis’ off-season storyline continues to entice. Yesterday, Tampa Bay GM Mark Dominik was quoted as saying his star cornerback could hit the field as early as the team’s third preseason game. That would put Revis a few weeks early in his official comeback from last year’s torn ACL--he wasn’t supposed to play until Week 1 of the regular season.
For his part, Revis is taking things a little more cautiously. He said he believes the third preseason game would be too soon, but he’s feeling good and is very close to a return. Regardless, the Bucs’ new toy should be good to go when the games start to count, and that’s all that matters. Oh yeah, and they’ll be playing the Jets--Revis’ old team--in Week 1.
Dennis Pitta, TE, Baltimore Ravens: All the high expectations for what was supposed to have been Pitta’s breakout season were crushed when he dislocated and fractured his hip late last month, but there could be some hope on the horizon. The Ravens haven’t ruled out a return later in the season, a sentiment buoyed by the fact that Pitta didn’t suffer any ligament damage when he sustained his injury.
It’s still a long-shot, though. Granted, we won’t know too much else until he gets a little further along in his recovery, but for now the safe bet is with a return in 2014. Even then, Pitta should be able to return at full health.
