NFL Updates 8/15: Charles, Marshall and More
August 15, 2013
The NFL preseason continues to chug along, and we’ll be treated to another slate of games tonight. Now that we’re getting back to the gridiron action, it’s a good time to take a look around the league at some of the noteworthy names out there and see what everyone’s up to. Let’s get right to it. Here’s the latest.
Tonight’s Schedule: Eight teams will be in action tonight, kicking off the second round of preseason games across the NFL. Expect the starters to linger in the games a little longer as the rust and miscues hopefully continue to be minimized. Here’s a look at the full schedule of games:
Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports
Lions at Browns, 7:30 PM ET
Falcons at Ravens, 7:30 PM ET
Panthers at Eagles, 7:30 PM ET
Chargers at Bears, 8:30 PM ET (Nationally Televised on ESPN)
Geno Smith, QB, New York Jets: The starting Jets QB scales tipped a little more into Mark Sanchez’s favor yesterday, as Smith suffered through a forgettable day. He tossed three interceptions in practice, which prompted Jets coach Rex Ryan to characterize the performance as “brutal.” Smith is coming off an ankle injury suffered in the team’s preseason opener, and may not even be able to play on Saturday against the Jaguars.
Due to the extenuating circumstances, the general feeling around the team is that Ryan won’t decide on a starter for Week 1 until after the team’s third preseason game. Neither Sanchez nor Smith has separated himself yet.
Jamaal Charles, RB, Kansas City Chiefs: We’ve been keeping a close watch on Charles recently, as he’s been suffering through a highly-publicized foot strain. He suffered the injury on Monday, but the X-rays came up negative and he’s been listed as day-to-day. Still, the team kept him out of practice once again yesterday as a precautionary measure.
There’s still no word on whether or not the team will allow Charles to play tomorrow against the 49ers, but we’d imagine they’ll err on the side of caution. He’s expected to be a huge part of their offense this year, and they’ll bring him back gradually.
Brandon Marshall, WR, Chicago Bears: Good news for Bears fans this morning. Marshall is expected to participate in tonight’s game against the Chargers. It will be his first preseason action, as the No. 1 WR sat out the opener as a precaution. He’s been dealing with some hip soreness, which is nothing new. He’s had multiple surgeries and arthroscopic procedures on his hip throughout his career.
It’ll be interesting to see Marshall (who will likely play around a quarter or so) back on the field again. He’s coming off a dominant season as QB Jay Cutler’s favorite target, posting 1508 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2012.
