NFL News: Player News and Updates for 8/16/13
2013-08-15 11:00:00 EDT
With four more preseason games in the books, the second round of warm-up games has begun around the NFL. We’ve got another four to look forward tonight, kicking off a four-day weekend full of football. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the developing storylines from around the league. Here’s the latest.
Tonight’s Schedule: We’ve got a couple of intriguing matchups mixed into tonight’s action, and each game has its own implications as far as individual player storylines. Here’s a quick look at what’s on tap for tonight:
Vikings at Bills, 7:00 PM ET
Buccaneers at Patriots, 8:00 PM ET (Nationally Televised on FOX)
Raiders at Saints, 8:00 PM ET
49ers at Chiefs, 8:00 PM ET
Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots: Brady has had an interesting week. After suffering a very scary knee injury on Wednesday (the same knee that caused him to miss an entire season a few years back), he was out there again yesterday. Brady’s injury is being called a sprain and isn’t considered serious. Still, his near-miss highlights just how important he is to the Patriots, as their season would likely be lost without him. We’ll have to wait and see how he feels before anyone can determine if he’ll play tonight.

Mark Sanchez, QB, New York Jets: In other AFC East news, the Jets announced yesterday that incumbent starter Mark Sanchez would be getting the nod against the Jaguars Saturday evening. This news was expected to come today, but after fellow QB Geno Smith’s ankle injury and subsequent “brutal” day at practice Wednesday, the team made the decision.
It’s been a fairly dull QB competition in New York thus far, as neither player has yet distanced himself from the competition. We get the feeling that the team would have already distanced themselves from the Butt-Fumble embarrassment of last season by cutting Sanchez if they didn’t still owe him so much money. A final decision probably won’t come until after the third preseason game.
Jimmy Graham, TE, New Orleans Saints: If the Saints are going to have a shot at their division this season, it’s going to come by virtue of their potent offense. Graham is a vital cog in that machine, and Saints fans got some good news yesterday concerning his health and conditioning. Graham reported that he and QB Drew Brees’ chemistry is as strong as ever, and that they’re already in “mid-season form.” He also made sure to pronounce himself healthy after fighting off a wrist injury from last season.
Fans can expect big things from the Saints’ offense in the coming year. Their defense, however, isn’t getting quite as much respect.
