The Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets meet at the Meadowlands as both teams look to erase a loss in last week’s preseason action.
The Jags are quickly becoming an NFL doormat as they never seem to be able to hold onto good players and when they do they seem to have the worst luck with injuries or a decline in performance which has dropped Jacksonville from an AFC Cinderella to being uninvited to the ball. Maurice Jones-Drew is surely one of the most gifted athletes in the NFL and when healthy he can certainly make a difference but the inconsistent play of Blaine Gabbert behind centre makes the Jags’ offense pretty one dimensional with the exception of the occasional deep ball to Cecil Shorts. Chad Henne made a case to be the team’s starter when filling in for Gabbert last season and while he is definitely an upgrade over the Missouri Tigers product I don’t think Henne is the long term answer for Jacksonville’s passing woes. They managed just three points at home against their in-state rivals from Miami last week and with MJD likely to see no action in this one the offensive futility is bound to continue.

The Jets meanwhile are coming off a tough road loss to the Detroit Lions after their second half rally came up short but you have to give New York credit for battling especially quarterback Greg McElroy who is making a case to replace Mark Sanchez as the team’s starter. New York is still a bit of a mess and it could be another season of growing pains for them as they get adjusted to new faces and expanding roles within the club. Bilal Powell is likely to see most of the snaps in the backfield in this one which is good news for the Jets as the bruising back has the talent to be a number one option on some teams and if he can prove his worth over the next couple weeks he could very well land the RB1 role with New York. Even though it is the preseason I think the Jags are a complete mess and it is going to take some time before they can right the ship in what seems like a neverending journey back to respectability and while the Jets aren’t much better I think they are in this instance and I think they get the victory.
