After a busy day of NFL preseason games yesterday, there’s plenty to talk about this morning. We’ve got some more football on the way in the coming hours, which makes this a good time to take a glance at some of the headlines around the league. Here’s a closer look at what’s going on.
Upcoming Preseason Schedule: We have two more games on the schedule for the second week of preseason, then it’s on to the all-important game three for teams across the NFL. In the meantime, here’s a glance at the two remaining games this weekend, and where you can find them.

Preseason Week 3 begins Thursday, with the Patriots at the Lions (7:30 PM ET), then the Panthers at the Ravens (8:00 PM ET on ESPN).
E.J. Manuel, QB, Buffalo Bills: It looks like Kevin Kolb will win the starting QB job in Buffalo by default. His competition, the rookie Manuel, was ruled out for the remainder of the preseason yesterday, thanks to a knee injury. An MRI revealed swelling that will take some time to heal, but as yet there’s no firm target date for his return.
That doesn’t mean Manuel will lose the starter job for good; there are plenty of things that could happen between now and when he steps on the field. Kolb was pretty ineffective on Friday, going 13-for-21 for 111 yards and a pick.
Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona Cardinals: Is Fitzgerald back? It seems that way. He posted another solid preseason performance yesterday against Dallas yesterday, tallying 44 yards on three receptions. New Cardinals QB Carson Palmer has a lot to do with that, as he (finally) brings an air of legitimacy to the position and the potential to put the ball wherever he wants.
The chemistry here is already evident, as Palmer and Fitzgerald have put in a lot of extra time together this off-season. It should make for a very interesting year in the most competitive division in football.
Jets QB Battle: It appears we’re no closer to deciding the starting QB in New York, as Jets rookie second-round pick Geno Smith had to sit out yesterday’s preseason game against the Jaguars. He’s dealing with an ankle injury, sustained in last week’s game, but has been practicing all week.
Meanwhile, Mark Sanchez started last night’s game for the Jets and posted his usual mixed bag of results. He was 13-of-23 for 169 yards, a TD and an INT through three quarters as New York took the win 37-13.
